When using LightSail to measure my scholars reading levels it helps me determine where they are at the beginning of the year. In addition, it allows me to set up unique plans, reading assignments and activities, and supports to give them throughout the school year to increase their reading comprehension and Lexile Levels. When scholars first access the program it allows them to take a diagnostic test called Power Challenge. The reading assessment measures their reading levels, comprehension for texts, ability to use literary skills, and their vocabulary depth. The program is very beneficial because it holds the scholars accountable for meeting their reading goals after they receive their Lexile Level scores from completing the Power Challenge.
While I receive scholars Lexile Level scores I can determine their reading levels by using the following charts in the images to the right. These following charts give me the guidelines on where my scholars stand based upon their grade, Fountas & Pinnell levels, Learning A-Z levels, and their exact Lexile Level ranges. This information is used to ensure that I know exactly where my scholars are for their reading levels and where I want them to go to meet their reading target goals. In my classroom, my goal is to have 80% of the scholars become grade-level competent for their reading levels. This isn't an easy task, but with accountability, rigorous resources, and support scholars can achieve what may seem impossible. |
